The most famous gunfight in history took place in Tombstone Arizona on October 26, 1881. This gunfight is known world wide as the "Shootout at the OK Corral" although it actually took place in a vacant
lot on Freemont street. The combatants were Virgil,Wyatt, Morgan Earp along with "Doc" Holliday versus Ike and Billy Clanton, Tom and Frank Mclaury, and Billy Claiborne. This information is probably the
only information on the subject that all historians will agree on , the rest of the facts are still debated till this day! The most important things to remember when researching this Gunfight are:
1. The Clantons were not nearly as bad and the Earps were not nearly as good as Hollywood makes them out to be. Keep in mind that Wyatt Earp was the last surviving member of this battle, and that we
probably would not have heard about it if it was not for Stuart Lake's biography of Wyatt Earp.
2. Earp and Clanton supporters in 1881 and to this day are pretty much full of crap from time to time so be careful on what you read and what you believe. It is very important to read as much as you
can on this subject, on my links page there are both Clanton and Earp sites listed, read them and make up your own mind. (for the record I put about 80% of the blame for this particular event on Ike Clanton
and 100% percent to Wyatt for blowing it out of proportion)
It is my view that the gun fight was neither an ambush or an execution, I feel it was more of a tragedy/accident. As you what happened leading up to the battle you will realize that mistakes were
made by both parties. Virgil should not had had Doc Holiday involved and Ike Clanton should have not shot off his mouth. I hope to show that most if not all of the Clanton gang wanted to leave town instead
of fight. What I will also suggest is that the Earp party did not murder the cowboy's but they only reacted the way that threatened men would react in dangerous situations.
What I hope to do is to re construct this gunfight, starting with Ike's run in with "Doc" Holliday on October 25th and finishing the morning of the 27th at the undertakers. I hope you enjoy my interpretation
of the "Shootout near the OK Corral".
